Rata Family by Dhavita Rata Family by Dhavita
Something I painted intending to sell or feature at KPAC, won 2nd place in the art contest. I have a full, free table to myself next year. Huzzah. :3

Derwent watercolor pencils over pencil sketch.

Please comment if you like it, any feedback would be great. :3

[Edit] Tweaked the saturation and lightened the colors a bit, hope it looks better.

This is so heart-warming. Often, one thinks that Raticate is a scary and intimidating pokemon but we always seem to forget that they are the parents of little Rattata www. The watercolouring gives it a story-book feeling. Eum, I am inclined to believe that this must look nicer in person (scans seldom do watercolour works justice...I-I find at least).

Yeah, the edges of the paint are a lot lighter and more subtle in the original. The scan made all the light greens darker and more pronounced for some reason so the background looks kind of gross. x.O

But thank you, I did kind of want a storybook feel, so I'm glad that came through. ^.^

This is adorable. :D

I think this would work nicely for a Light Raticate card.

You should be! :)
Btw, I just noticed that you coloured this with watercolour pencils. I don't really have much experience with them so I was wondering, did you shade with the pencils first and then use water?

Well, basically I colored it in layers.
I'd add a flat wash of a base color first, brush over with water, then let it dry.
Then add another layer of color to shade it with, add water, then let it dry, etc.
Basically did this over and over again until I got the look I wanted.
Hope that helped. :3

Watercolor pencils definitely take some time and experimentation to get used to, but they're great to work with and fun to use, so I hope more people try them. ^-^
